Growing up as White Polish-American slaves for Jews in South Chicago, besides starving, I often didn’t have a paper nor a pencil to do my homework in grammar school. So I got the ingenious idea to use an old chiffarobe, like this one, as a blackboard. I would use the right side panel as a long blackboard, I had a piece of chalk, and then played like I was a teacher. I’d teach the subject or problems of what my homework was.
Since I failed 1st grade, because I didn’t have shoes to get to school in the icy, freezing, snowy Chicago winters, I had to work twice as hard. Eventually, I went on to graduate with Straight A’s in high school, against all odds.
